Ashanti Region — Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, has unveiled a bold decentralisation proposal aimed at accelerating development and job creation in the Ashanti Region, particularly for the youth.

Speaking during his ongoing Ashanti Regional Unity Tour, Hon. Agyapong announced that one of his first strategic actions, if elected President, would be the relocation of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources from Accra to the Ashanti Region. He further proposed that the Ministry of Works and Housing should also be sited in the region as part of a broader plan to stimulate economic activity.

According to him, the excessive concentration of government institutions in Accra has limited growth opportunities in other regions, despite their immense resource potential. He stressed that decentralising critical ministries would not only bring governance closer to the people but also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for young people.

“The Ashanti Region has the human capital, the land resources, and the strategic relevance to host key government institutions,” he said. “Relocating these ministries here will keep the region economically active and position it as a major driver of national development.”

Hon. Agyapong explained that the presence of these ministries would attract private sector investment, boost infrastructure development, and strengthen institutional oversight in areas such as land administration, housing delivery, and natural resource management.

Party executives, delegates, and grassroots supporters who participated in the engagements welcomed the proposal, describing it as practical and aligned with the region’s development needs. Many noted that such a move would significantly reduce youth unemployment and deepen the Ashanti Region’s contribution to Ghana’s economic growth.

The proposal forms part of Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong’s broader vision for balanced national development, decentralised governance, and inclusive economic growth, as he continues consultations with party stakeholders ahead of the NPP’s internal processes.
